Scanning Ion Conductance Microscopy (SICM)

Similar to Scanning Tunneling Microscopy in ambient air, SICM operates in liquid without any physical contact with or force applied to sample surface. A glass nanopipette probe filled with an electrolyte senses ion current to feedback its position relative to a sample completely immersed in a liquid buffer. Since the probe-sample distance is maintained by keeping the ionic current constant instead of applying a physical force to the sample, it is an ideal tool to obtain stable images of soft and sticky biological samples in liquid.
